1. What is a Pap Smear test?
It is a simple test done in which cells are removed from the neck or the womb o cervix. These cells are examined under a microscope to check for any changes or abnormalities which could lead to cancer.
2. Does it hurt?
No. There may be a slight discomfort if you are tense but it is not painful.
3. How often should it be done?
Routinely every 2 year after the onset of sexual activity until the age of 70 years. But more frequently if advised by doctor.
Note: If you experience unexpected bleeding or increased discharge at anytime you should see your doctor even if your recentsmear is normal
4. What if it is abnormal?
Mild and most abnormalities do not indicate a serious problem, so don't be afraid to have the test. If every woman has her smear test done regularly as recommended, 90% of cervical cancer can be prevented.
Like all screening test the pap smear is not 100% accurate as ocassionally abnormal cells may not be detected for many reasons.
5. At what age should a woman start having smears?
All female who are or have been sexually active are at risk even those who have had a hysterectomy.
6. How long Does it take to get the results?
Usually the result is available within a week's time.
7. What if you find that I have cancer?
If cancer is found in the early stages, treatment is usually very effective. This is why -
HAVE YOUR REGULAR SMEAR DONE!!

pap smear helps reduces the likelihood of developing cervical cancer and it could save your life. all women should have regular pap smears until she's reached the age of 65. if a woman had normal test results for 3 years in a row, then she doesn't need to have it every year.
