The Five D's

    * Delay until the urge passes - usually within 3 to 5 minutes.

    * Distract yourself. Call a friend or go for a walk.

    * Drink water to fight off cravings.

    * Deep Breaths - Relax! Close your eyes and take 10 slow, deep breaths.

    * Discuss your feelings with someone close to you or at the support forum here at About.com Smoking Cessation.

Use a nicotine substitute like the patch or gum when you quit to help ease your body off of its dependency on it.

When you are experiencing symptoms of withdrawal, remind yourself of why you are quitting; write your reasons on a card and keep it with you. Remind yourself that whatever discomfort you are experiencing is only a tiny fraction of the probable discomfort associated with continued smoking (i.e. Painful diseases like cancer, surgery, chemotherapy, emphysema etc.).

If you into meditation or Yoga, it is very easy to quit any bad habit. Mind is the key factor for any habit. So if you practice meditation, you can control your feeling. So its easy to get away from cravings to smoke.

smoking withdrawal syndrome is a common thing to experience when you give up smoking. i don't think you can prevent from having them but these symptoms are just temporary and you should gradually feel better in three to four days after, so no worries!

I agree. Those who want to quit smoking should try to get into yoga and of course find someone who can be your buddy so you will have the support you need.
