I don’t know whether I am posting in the right section or not. If not then I am sorry. I am neither a medical officer nor a patient but rather a caregiver. My dad suffers from gout. He had a first attack one year ago. The doctor said that he might get another attack in 6 months to 2 years. Luckily nothing of this sort has happened but anything can happen at any time. Dad has been taking all the precautions advised by the doctor. He doesn’t consume alcohol, high-purine foods, such as meat, fish, dry beans (also lentils and peas), mushrooms, spinach, asparagus, cauliflower etc. Dad is going to US for some business purposes next week. I am getting worried that he will not take good care of his health over there and he might get another attack over there. What is he gong to do alone in a stranger country? Who will help him? I am really worried thinking all this. I got the idea to look for info on the hospitals and clinics in US so that he can phone if ever he falls in some difficulty. While searching, I came across a United States pharmacy directory where you can get the address and the phone number of the local pharmacies in United States grouped by cities but I have no information on the hospitals in US. Can someone please tell me where I can get this info?

May be you can search from the internet. When is your dad going? I will help you when I am free.

meantime, get your father some colchicine when he is away in case he had another attack there.

Thank you for replying drbalo. I feels so nice when you know that someone is there to help you.
I had a look at the link you provided and it's really great. I will note down the telephone number of all the hospitals in Alabama and give it to dad so that he can call them if he is in some difficulty. I just pray to god that dad returns home safely.

Let's analyze the Gout Treatment Overview

The goals of treatment for gout are rapid pain relief and prevention of future gout attacks and long-term complications, such as joint destruction and kidney damage. Treatment includes medications and steps you can take at home to prevent future attacks.

Initial treatment

Gout is treated with medications to relieve symptoms and measures to eliminate causes. Specific treatment depends on whether you are having an acute attack or are trying to prevent future attacks.

To reduce the pain, swelling, redness, and warmth of the affected joint(s) in an acute gout attack:

* Rest the affected joint.
* Take one or more of the following medications at the first sign of a gout attack, as prescribed by your health professional.
* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or indomethacin. Avoid aspirin because it may abruptly change uric acid levels in the blood and may make symptoms worse.
* Colchicine
* Corticosteroids
* ACTH

Gout is a kind of arthritis. It can cause an attack of sudden burning pain, stiffness, and swelling in a joint, usually a big toe. These attacks can happen over and over unless gout is treated. Over time, they can harm your joints, tendons, and other tissues. Gout is most common in men.

What causes gout?

Gout is caused by too much uric acid in the blood. Most of the time, having too much uric acid is not harmful. Many people with high levels in their blood never get gout. But when uric acid levels in the blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints.

Your chances of getting gout are higher if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol, or eat too much meat and fish that are high in chemicals called purines. Some medicines, such as water pills (diuretics), can also bring on gout.

What are the symptoms?

The most common sign of Gout is a nighttime attack of swelling, tenderness, redness, and sharp pain in your big toe. You can also get Gout attacks in your foot, ankle, or knees. The attacks can last a few days or many weeks before the pain goes away. Another attack may not happen for months or years.

See your doctor even if your pain from gout is gone. The buildup of uric acid that led to your gout attack can still harm your joints.

How is gout diagnosed?

Your doctor will ask questions about your symptoms and do a physical exam. Your doctor may also take a sample of fluid from your joint to look for uric acid crystals. This is the best way to test for gout. Your doctor may also do a blood test to measure the amount of uric acid in your blood.
