Be careful if you are using contact lenses! There may be parasites lurking behind your conact lenses if you are careless in your cleansing regime!! Inadequate cleasing allows a type of aquatic parasites to invade the cornea, causing what is known as acanthamoeba keratitis or corneal ulcer acanthamoeba.

The condition is rare but painful and can lead to blindness. Symptoms include sensation of having something in the eye, watery eyes, blurred vision, light sensitivity, swelling of the upper eyelid and extreme pain. If the disease is detected earlier, it rsponds rapdly to treatment. However, if it is recognised late, intensive treatment may be needed up to 12 months.

Guidelines for the Prevention of Acanthamoeba Keratitis
1. Always use the prescribed lens care system
2. Wash and thoroughly dry your hands before applying, removing and cleasing your contact lenses
3. Dispose of the disinfection solution when lenses are removed for wear
4. Air-dry the storage case and keep dry when lenses are being worn
5. Always use fresh disinfection solution
6. Use only sterile solution to store or wash lenses
7. Replace your lens storage case monthly
8. Remove lenses prior to showering, swimming, water sports, hot tub use, etc.
9. If lenses must be worn when swimming, wear goggles.
