I am currently on oral pils for contraception. But I plan to stop it soon since I am having bad nausea and vomiting after taking the pills besides knowing the potential side effects of the pills. I would prefer natural methods. Is it reliable? How do I know when is my "safe period"?

The following is the best & safe method to avoid pregnancy:-
First, you should know the duration of the cycle, i.e. first day of the last menstrual bleeding to the first day of the present menstrual bleeding. This is the duration of the menstrual cycle.

This duration varies from person to person & is usually between 26 to 31 days.

Ovulation approximately occurs in the middle of the cycle, i.e. duration of the cycle - (minus) 14 days (this also varies).

A week before and a week after the approximate day of ovulation is Fertile period.

The days apart from this is called the safe periods, where the fertilization does not takes place.

So, to calculate the safe period you must know the fertile period.

Calculation of fertile period: The shortest cycle minus 18 days=1st day of fertile period. The longest cycle minus 10 days= last day of fertile period.

E.g. a women's menstrual cycle varies from 26days to 31days cycle,
The shortest cycle [26days] minus18days=8th day.
The longest cycle [31days] minus 10days=21st day.

Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period.

Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as SAFE PERIOD.

Safe period is safe for sexual activity.

Hope this helps Wink

But you must know that natural method has relatively high failure rate compare to other methods. You may consider other contraceptive methods such as intrauterine device etc. I will start a topic on types of contraceptive methods available soon.

Apparently we have to observe for a period of time before we know which is our longest cycle and shortest cycle....
other than having sexual intercourse during safe period, your partner also has responsibility as well such as wearing condom during the activity.

And, how long will the menses return to normal and regular cycle after cessation of oral contraceptive pills?

zpt, not many men including me would like to wear condoms all the time. It is not that comfortable.

I think what zpt meant was contraception is the responsiblity of the couple. The responsibility is not only with the female. Whatever method is used, it should be discussed between the couple. Mutual understanding is important

natural method has higher risk of getting pregnant. this is not suitable for people who are sexually active. maybe you should consider another method. how about depo shots?

Calculation of fertile period: The shortest cycle minus 18 days=1st day of fertile period. The longest cycle minus 10 days= last day of fertile period.

The shortest cycle [26days] minus18days=8th day.

Thus, 8th to 21st day of each cycle counting from first day of menstrual period is considered as fertile period.

Period other than this fertile period in a menstrual cycle is considered as SAFE PERIOD.

If one wants to avoid pregnancy avoid intercourse during fertile period. Safe period is safe for sexual activity.

Nope. It isnt always reliable. A woman can get pregnant even if:

-she has her period
-had sex during a non-ovulating day
-used condoms
-uses bc pills

I read this article, it's about female hormones and it mentioned there that testosterone levels in women are at their highest when the woman reaches the age of 20. This is also considered the best biological age for a woman to get pregnant since women in this age group have the best chance of a healthy pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Whatever bc methods you try, if your testosterone levels are high, then you are most likely to get pregnant, especially without the use of pills or condoms.

It all depends on the couple and how they feel about having sex when a girl has her period. Basically, some girls (and guys) don't like the idea of having sex during a period, some see it as a natural monthly break in the action, and others are perfectly comfortable with it
