The fact about an effect of Diabetes is that The ED is one of the prominent complications induced by the diabetes Huh?. The Erectile dysfunction is occurred in 80% of the men suffering from diabetes. In some cases the severe form of ED/Impotency which caused due to diabetes is not responding to the standard ED drugs Shocked.

The researchers identified ED risks as well as development of new potential drugs to fight the root of cause Smiley. Researchers have now identified some of the molecular changes that take place at the onset ED induced due to diabetes.

medical research on ED:.

Proteomics approach was used to examine the abundance of protein in the corpora i.e. the expandable tissue along the length of the penis and where the blood is filled during erection. The experiment was conducted on two diabetic rats at two different progressive stages of one week and two months from onset of diabetes. 57 proteins were identified that increased in the penile tissue that increased or decreased during the diabetes.

Collagen proteins which provide strength and stiffness during erection and other proteins which transport sexual hormones were down regulated. Whereas the proteins which are responsible for cell deaths and the others related to fat metabolism were up regulated. These changes could be due to the narrowing and hardening of blood vessels.

How the erection takes place?

Erection of penis occurs with sensory and mental stimulation. Impulses from the brain and local nerves causes the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax, allows blood to flow in and fills the open spaces of the veins and nerves. The blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, making the penis expand. The tunica albuginea helps to trap the blood in the corpora cavernosa, by this action the penis gets erection.

The penis contains two chambers, called the corpora cavernosa, which run the length of the organ . A spongy tissue fills the chambers. The spongy tissue contains smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and ejaculate, runs along the underside of the corpora cavernosa. The corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a membrane, called the tunica albuginea.

Now that Thomasperraz has explained very well, the physiology of the penis and its erection, let us see what are the various factors that cause Erectile Dysfunction.

A sensory stimulation due to touch or sight or a mental stimulation due to a thought, or both, cause the brain to send an impulse through the spinal cord, and then through the concerned local nerves to the corpora cavernosa in the penis, causing it to expand. As a result, the corpora cavernosa gets filled with blood and due this pressure, an erection occurs.

I cannot resist but mention here that:

"The lightest thing in the world is the penis. Why? Because even a thought can raise it"

In which conditions, this function fails?

This function fails when there is damage to the body tissues required for a proper penile erection, such as the nerves, arteries, smooth muscles of the penis and the fibrous tissue of the penis. Such conditions are:-

1) Nerve Diseases such as in Diabetic neuropathy and Chronic alcoholism giving rise to neuritis. whereby the impulses are not properly transmitted by the nerves.

2) Vascular diseases  such as occurring in Diabetes and  Atherosclerosis, which result in improper blood flow to the penis due to clogging of the arteries..

3) Kidney diseases cause  imbalance in the functioning of the hypothalamus-pituitary gland- gonadal axis resulting in  suppression of the gonadotrophin hormone which is essential for reproduction.

4) Certain lifestyle habits such as smoking, obesity and a sedentary life style which all contribute to diabetes and atherosclerosis.

5) Certain medications given for hypertension, depression, peptic ulcer, allergy and for suppressing appetite.

6) Stress, anxiety and a feeling of guilt or a fear of inability to perform sex can cause clouding of the mind which prevents the brain from sending out that signal or impulse.

7) Surgical trauma, to the concerned nerves or arteries or tissues around the penis during surgery on prostrate or the urinary bladder, can occur and give rise to ED.

Cool And of course, old age where physiological ED sets in.
