We've all heard about acupuncture, an 'ancient' method used in Chinese traditional medicine. Although Western medicine is now widely practiced, there are many who still believe in the effectiveness of acupuncture. In fact, there are many clinical trials on this topic. You may want to search for them if you're interested. In the meantime, here are some basic facts about acupuncture:

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a method of treatment in which fine needles are inserted at specific points in the body to relieve pain and illness.  Treatments are based on the philosophy of promoting health and balance.  It can be used alone or in conjunction with your current medical care.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture has been shown to cause changes in the brain and stimulate the release of endorphins (hormones associated with pain relief).  In addition, there have been numerous studies illustrating acupuncture's effectiveness.

Acupuncture has been endorsed by the National Institute of Health, and is currently being studied at:

- University of Pennsylvania Medical Center
- The George Washington University
- Harvard University
- University of Maryland

What conditions does it treat?
Addiction: Smoking Cessation
Allergies
Arthritis
Asthma
Back Pain
Bronchitis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Chemotherapy Side Effects
Chronic Fatigue
Chronic Sinusitis
Cold & Flu
Constipation & Diarrhea
Depression
Fibroids
Fibromyalgia
Headache & Migraine

High Blood Pressure
Immune System
Indigestion
Infertility
Irregular Menstruation
Knee Pain
Menopausal Syndromes
Morning Sickness
Neck and Shoulder Pain
Obesity
PMS & Menstrual Cramps
Repetitive Stress Injuries
Sciatica
Sprains & Sport Injuries
Stress & Anxiety
Tendonitis

Are the needles clean? **

All needles are taken from a new sterilized package, used once, and discarded.

What should I expect on my first visit?

The first visit begins with the practitioner taking a detailed medical history.  In addition to a typical medical history taken at the doctors office, other questions will be asked such as your sleep habits, ability to tolerate heat or cold, dietary habits, etc..  After reviewing your medical history, you may have an examination of the tongue and of your pulse.

After obtaining your medical history and diagnosis, the practitioner will begin the treatment.  A treatment may include needles inserted into specific points on the body, moxabustion, and electrical stimulation (similar to what's used in a physical therapy or chiropractic office).

Your first visit usually last about 40-60 minutes.  Most treatments require a minimum of 4-6 visits.  As with other medical modalities (physical therapy, chiropractic, medicine), acupuncture requires a series of treatments to be most effective.

How many treatments will I need?

Most conditions require a minimum of 6-8 treatments.

Do the needles hurt?

Acupuncture needles are solid and very thin.  Needles are only inserted about 1/2 inch.  While each person's experience is different, most people feel a minimal amount of pain as the needle is inserted.

How should I prepare for my treatments?

Prepare to give a detailed medical history including current and previous medications.  Do not eat or consume caffeinated foods or
beverages several hours before treatment (this may discolor tongue and make it difficult to examine). Wear loose fitting clothes.

** I've never been to any acupuncture centres but I do hope ALL centres use new & sterilized needles! Please check this with the acupuncture centre that you are visiting.

Does anyone has any personal experience on acupuncture? Please feel free to share your thoughts....!

Good one, cecilia! Smiley

especially the 'warning'. a lot of people who undergo acupuncture tend to forget the perils of unsterilized needles...such as HIV, & Hepatitis

So, for those who decide to undergo acupuncture treatment, please go to CERTIFIED acupuncture pracititioners! i believe they need proper practicing license

According to:

Hantoushzadeh S, Alhusseini N, Lebaschi AH, The effects of acupuncture during labor on nulliparous women: A randomized controlled trial, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetric and Gynaecology 2007; 47:26-30

Acupuncture is a safe and acceptable technique that can reduce the duration of the labor active phase and decrease the amount of oxytocin needed for augmentation

Limitation in the study:
Not a blinded study
Lack of objective measurement of pain

The centre that I go to requires you to buy the needle for your own use.  You have to sterilize the needles at home before using it again and after 10 times or within a month, whichever comes first, you have to discard it and buy new ones.

This is perhaps one of few traditional healing methods with scientific evidence.

Otherwise, it is very difficult for me to beleive in traditional healers.

Thanks, oddpapa for sharing your experience. Can I assume that you've gone through many acupuncture sessions? If so, could you share with us about the therapy, and is it effective for you? How many sessions do you need before you see improvements?

Is it expensive? I would like to try it but am afraid of the price.
In addition, what if during the insertion of the needles I moved
because of shock? Will I bleed? Oh man, it's scary as I can't handle
pain properly and tend to do sudden movements a lot. Sad
