Folic acid deficiency in pregnant women can lead to neural tube defects or malformations of backbones of the foetus. In severe case, the newborn can be paralysed. Neural Tube defects usually occur in the first 28 days after fertilisation and most of the time pregnancy is detected after that. Therefore, instead of taking folic acid supplement after pregnancy is confirmed, it is better to take folic acid once a woman is sexually active.

Attribute it to lack of awareness, of the possible serious complication the future child might face.

Once sexually active Wink I believe Dr Toh assuming that
becoming sexually active = planning for a baby.

3-monthgs before getting pregnant...for planned pregnancies - fine. If accident happens then how??

Hhmmm...$$$ is definitely an issue. But if planning for a baby dee, why not spend a bit to ensure the baby is healthy. Standard criteria says 3-months rite.
How much does a bottle of folic acid cost (in pharmacies)?

Man..children ain't easy or cheap to maintain, are they? Undecided

i agree with most of you saying that 3 months in advance to take the folic acid.. However, as Dr. Teoh said, once sexually active maybe is too exaggerated.. but he did bring up a very important point that for most women, if plan for having a baby, need to take folic acid and iron in-advance. why is it important? it is because the normal female, they will have monthly "blood-donation"-- period.. so they tends to have a lower folic acid and iron contents compare with males. so why not before having a children, build up the storage of the mother, so that can get a healthy baby, isnt it? Cheesy
besides tat, normal physiological changes of pregnancy can lead to anemia too. by icreasing the folic acid and iron contains, the chances of getting a neutto-tube defect fetus will be much much lesser.. isnt it an advantage too? Grin
However, if a mother with bad gynaecological and obstetric histories, much earlier suppliments with folic acid and iron is crucial.. 6-12months in advance will be better.... Those with high risk e.g. well-controlled epilepsy who plan to have baby, is better to take high dose folic acid much earlier before pregnant..

hope those information helps.

Biological roles
Folate is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells.[1] This is especially important during periods of rapid cell division and growth such as infancy and pregnancy. Folate is needed to replicate DNA. Thus folate deficiency hinders DNA synthesis and cell division, affecting most clinically the bone marrow, a site of rapid cell turnover. Because RNA and protein synthesis are not hindered by folate deficiency, large red blood cells called megaloblasts are produced, resulting in megaloblastic anemia.[2] Both adults and children need folate to make normal red blood cells and prevent anemia.[3]
