When H. Pylori enters the body, they penetrate the protective mucus layer which protects the stomach and duodenum from acid and enzyme attacks. They weakens the mucus layer and eat into the tissue underneath, forming ulcers. In other words, tiny holes are formed along lining of stomach and intestines, often causing pain, discomfort and complications.

10% of adult population worldwide suffers from peptic ulcers. Today, we know most ulcers are probably due to infection with this bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori. To cure the ulcer, they must be effective ways to fight the bacteria.

H. pylori infection is common but not normal. It is a pathogen. In fact, H. Pylori has been classified by WHO as Group 1 Definitive Carcinogen (cancer causing agent). In a recent study on Malaysian Patients, H. Pylori was detected in:

2. Serology/finger prick test
3. Urea Breath Test

Treatment of H. Pylori:
If tests show H.pylori bacteria are in your digestive tract, medication can be prescribed to kill them so that your ulcer can heal.

What is Urea Breath Test?

It is a fast and accurate (98.6%), non-invasive test. You just need to blow into a special bag and sent for analysation. The substrate of the test will interact with enzyme ureased produced by H. Pylori. Carbon Dioxide will be emitted through this interaction. This specially labelled carbon dioxide level will then be quantified. If this specially labelled carbon dioxide is present, that means H. Pylori is present. And further eradication therapy is needed.

Obesity secondary to eating too much fatty foods is also one of the factors that can cause gastric cancer.  H. pylori can also cause hodgkin's lymphoma I read an article about it.
