Folic Acid to Prevent Neural Tube Defect

We usually prescribe folic acid to our patients once pregnancy is confirmed. However, neural tube defects usually occur in the first 28 days after fertilisation and preganacy is usually detected after that. Therefore, for primary prevention of neural tube defects, folic acid must be started before pregnancy. In my opinion, it is even better if every female starts taking folic acid supplement once sexually active.

That's the problem here. Rcommendations by guidelines are not always practical. What we can do is try our best explaning to our patient. Neither my patients like to take "medicine" everyday.

The incidence of neural tubes defect is very low......that's why is just a guideline.....
