We usually prescribe folic acid to our patients once pregnancy is confirmed. However, neural tube defects usually occur in the first 28 days after fertilisation and preganacy is usually detected after that. Therefore, for primary prevention of neural tube defects, folic acid must be started before pregnancy. In my opinion, it is even better if every female starts taking folic acid supplement once sexually active.

Like that...Better fortify rice with folic acid or something.......U thot all ladies love to pop in tablets everyday issit?? Just a comment ok....no hard feelings ok... Grin

That's the problem here. Rcommendations by guidelines are not always practical. What we can do is try our best explaning to our patient. Neither my patients like to take "medicine" everyday. Sad

The incidence of neural tubes defect is very low......that's why is just a guideline.....
